Leonard George Plate, Sr. passed away peacefully at his home in Wellsville with family by his side on September 17, 2026.

Leonard was born and raised in Wellsville, OH and graduated with the class of 1957. There is where he met the love of his life, Helen. The two were married on October 20, 1957. They raised their three sons in Wellsville and had 61 wonderful years together.

He was a kind, gentle, generous man who always worked hard to provide for his family, and some of that hard work included working the family owned coal mine with his father and uncle.

He was a member of the Lake Mount Church of Christ and Wellsville First Christian Church, where he was Deacon, played softball, and was in the choir and men's chorus.

He immensely enjoyed playing softball, playing the organ, and singing in a Southern Gospel quartet with some of his friends and family. He also enjoyed riding his motorcycle, playing cards with friends, making (and eating) his famous homemade ice cream, traveling to Tennessee to see his son, Wayne, perform, and getting into the Christmas spirit with his epic Christmas village. He was a huge fan of watching Cleveland sports and the Ohio State Buckeyes. But, he loved nothing more than spending time with his family.

Leonard was an amazing husband, father, Pap-Pap, and friend. He was a bright light in this world who touched many lives. He will be deeply missed and forever in the hearts of those that had the honor of knowing him.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Helen; his son, Wayne; and his son, Brian.

He is survived by his sister, Melody Plate; son, Leonard G. Plate, Jr. (Rondala); daughter-in-law, Suzie Plate; 5 grandchildren: Carissa (Tom) Wilcox, Dara (Timothy) Mahowald, Cody (Sara) Plate, Mindy (Matthew) Jordan, Jerrod (Amber) Plate; and 9 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held on Monday, September 21, 2026 at The Martin Chapel of Care Funeral & Cremation in Calcutta from 3PM-6PM. The funeral will follow at 6PM with Pastor Mark Blakeley of Wellsville First Christian Church officiating.
