Don served his nation with honor as a proud United States Marine from 1953 until his honorable discharge in 1956, with distinguished service in Japan and Korea. Following his military service, he built a respected career as a machinist at Mackintosh-Hemphill in Midland, where he worked diligently until his retirement.

A man committed to civic duty, Don was an active member of the American Legion Post #70. He further demonstrated his leadership and advocacy skills through his roles as Past Union President of Local 1269 and as a Democratic Committee Member, where he strove to make a positive impact in his community.

Along with his parents, Don was preceded in death by his brothers: John, Ralph, and Jay; and his sisters: Louise, Dorothy, and Betty.

His memory will be forever cherished by his loving wife of 64 years, Karen (Glover) Mattern, who stood by his side since their wedding on February 13, 1960.
