Obituary

Ben Sayre, 88, of Calcutta passed away on Friday, April 19, 2024. "Benny" was a lifelong area resident, born and raised in Wellsville, OH where he spent his youth and early adult years prior to relocating to Calcutta. He was a graduate of Wellsville High School, Class of 1954, and was a drummer in the high school band. He was an Engineer with Norfolk & Southern Railroad where he served for 30 years until his retirement in 1999. Prior to his role as an Engineer, he was formerly employed with H.K. Porter of Irondale, Ohio in payroll accounting.

Ben loved to hunt and fish, and highly enjoyed his annual treks on these adventures. He also loved gardening in the summer and always tended a garden until mobility limitations got in the way. Ben traveled frequently and often to Florida where he enjoyed the mild winters of the South. Ben was also a 32nd degree Mason.

Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Mildred Roush Sayre, whom he married in June, 1959. Together, they have 3 children, a daughter, Susan Romero and her husband Julio of Spring Hill, Florida, a daughter, Lisa Tice of East Liverpool, and a son, Marcus Sayre, who preceded him in death in December, 1979. There are 6 grandchildren: Joseph Jiran of Santa Barbara, CA, Steven Jiran of Los Angeles, CA, Patrick Romero of Van Nuys, CA, Rachel Romero of Spring Hill, Florida, Mark Tice and wife Grace of Columbus, OH and Anna Jennings of Cornelius,NC. There are 2 great grandchildren, Adelaide and Naomi Tice, both of Columbus, OH. Ben's parents Rex and Luella (Cook) Sayre and his only brother Jack Sayre, also preceded him in death.

The MacLean Chapel of Care Funeral & Cremation Specialists,509 Riverside Avenue, Wellsville have been entrusted with the arrangements. Calling hours will be 11am-1pm Wednesday, April 24, 2024 and funeral services will be held at 1pm following visitation. Internment will be in Spring Hill Cemetery, Wellsville.

The family would like to thank the staff at The Suites at Pepperberry and Valley Hospice for their kindness and compassionate care, making his comfort their priority.
